What are Motorcycle Chain Sizes?

When it comes to motorcycles, the chain serves as a vital link between the engine’s power and the rear wheel’s motion. However, motorcycle chains come in various sizes, and It’s crucial to select the right chain size for your motorcycle to ensure proper fitment & smooth operation and to prevent premature wear or damage to the chain & sprockets.

From standard to heavy-duty chains, each size has specific characteristics that cater to different riding styles, engine capacities, and overall performance requirements. Read on if you want to know about different motorcycle chain sizes.

1) Understanding Motorcycle Chain Sizes

When referring to a motorcycle chain size, it does not mean its length but various other factors which determine the overall strength, such as;

  1. a) Pitch: Pitch refers to the distance between the centers of two consecutive rollers in a motorcycle chain. It determines the size and compatibility of the chain. For example, if a chain has a pitch of 0.5 inches, the centers of two adjacent rollers are 0.5 inches apart.
  2. b) Roller Width: Roller width is the measurement of the thickness of the rollers in a motorcycle chain. It represents the width of the cylindrical part of the roller that engages with the sprocket teeth. A wider roller width usually results in improved chain strength and durability.
  3. c) Roller Diameter: Roller diameter refers to the size of the rollers in a motorcycle chain. It represents the measurement of the diameter of the cylindrical part of the roller. Larger roller diameters often indicate higher load-bearing capacity and enhanced chain performance.
  4. d) Pin Diameter: Pin diameter refers to the thickness or diameter of the pins in a motorcycle chain. The pins are the cylindrical components that hold the rollers together and allow them to rotate. The pin diameter determines the strength and durability of the chain.motorcycle size

2) What are the different Types of Motorcycle Chain Sizes?

Several different sizes of motorcycle chains are available, each designed for specific applications and requirements. Some common motorcycle chain sizes, along with their typical applications, are;

  1. i) 415 Chain
  2. ii) 420 Chain
  3. iii) 425 Chai
  4. iv) 428 Chain
  5. v) 520 Chains
  6. vi) 525 Chain
  7. vii) 530 Chainvii) 630 Chain

i) 415 Chain

Primarily used in small motorcycles and dirt bikes equipped with low-power engines, the 415 chain is available in both half links and master links. This chain variation caters to heavy-duty and standard-duty applications;

ii) 420 Chain

The 420 chain is mostly used in vehicles such as 110cc and 125cc go-karts, dirt bikes, pit bikes, mini bikes, scooters, and ATV quads. It is classified as a non-standard series roller chain and is made to be heavy-duty with modifications like solid rollers and heat-treated components.

iii) 425 Chain

425 is another species of heavy-duty chain. It is mostly used for application that requires heavy & robust strength and lifting power, like in 4×4 ATVs and other off-road bike applications. However, it is not suitable for on-road speed bikes.

iv) 428 Chain

The “428” roller chain is part of a non-standard series of roller chains. The 428 chain is widely used in motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles), and other power sports vehicles. It is commonly employed in applications requiring moderate-power transmissions, such as lightweight motorcycles and off-road vehicles.

v) 520 Chains

The “520” chain is designed for mid-range power bikes, and it’s popular among various styles of bikes, including street, sport, and off-road bikes. It offers a good balance between power and weight.

vi) 525 Chain

The 525 chain is made from high-quality steel and is designed to be durable and long-lasting. The chain is a popular non-standard series of roller chains with a pitch of  0.625 inches.

This size is commonly used in larger motorcycles and sports bikes, providing increased strength for higher power levels. It is commonly used in higher-power transmission applications, such as heavy-duty motorcycles and off-road vehicles.

vii) 530 Chain

530 is one of the most powerful and priciest chains that you can find on the market. This extreme chain is made for heavier on-road bikes like Harley-Davidsons, Triumph, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, swingarm bikes, rigid chopper/bobbers, etc.
