What material is motorcycle brake rotors made of?

What material is motorcycle brake rotors made of? That’s a question for motorcycle novice.

Mostly, motorcycle brake rotors are made of stainless steel, aluminum alloy and stainless steel aluminum alloy. Each types of brake rotors, has different characteristic, and the price are different. Wonderful brake rotors always has expensive price, because it has excellent material and great manufacturing process. Contrary, the cheap motorcycle brake rotors because of the cheap material and bad manufacturing process. Now, let’s understand the characteristic of brake disc

Material of the motorcycle brake rotors

Stainless steel

The stainless steel brake rotors are most common materials for motorcycle. The reason why stainless steel has such a high audience rate, because it has good physical properties and good chemical properties, excellent steel properties, low thickness, great durability and good antioxidant capacity. Mostly, stainless steel brake rotors uses 420 (2Cr13) .

Aluminum alloy

Aluminum alloy brake disc always use in Motorcycle race, because it has great Lightweight performance and good brake performance. Compared with stainless steel, aluminum alloy can reduce the motorcycle curb weight, and then improve the motorcycle’s handling performance in the track, it also can gives motorcycle racing driver more confident.

However, things will develop in the opposite direction when they become extreme. Although the material of aluminum alloy has great track performance, aluminum alloy has bad wear resistance.

When the aluminum alloy brake rotors used for a period of time (need to replace), it braking performance will decrease, the aluminum alloy has be replaced. But, it is troublesome for replace the brake disc in daily life. Motorcycle brake rotor replacement also need so much time and money. At this time, relative to it great Lightweight performance, the braking performance are more needed.

Stainless steel+Aluminum alloy

Brake rotors uses the material ofstainless steel+aluminum alloy, combines the advantages of the two materials. This brake rotors are not integrated, it made of two different parts: Inner and outer ring.

Inner ring

Inner ring uses the material of the aluminum alloy, because of great hardness, which can prop up the whole brake rotor. Also it reduces the mass of the integral brake rotor, compare with the stainless steel brake rotors, this brake rotors has better performance.

Outer ring

Outer ring uses the material of the stainless steel. When the motorcycle is braking, the motorcycle pad and brake rotors will be fit. Because the brake pads act on the outer brake discs, the action point must uses materials with good wear resistance. Protect the brake rotors performance will not be affect by wear and tear.

Manufacturing process of motorcycle brake disc

But even uses the same material of stainless steel (420 2Cr13), the brake rotors performance are different, that’s function of processing, which bring the material different properties. The most common function of processing are CNC, metal punching and forge.

CNC

Computer numerical control (CNC) is a method for automating control of machine tools through the use of software embedded in a microcomputer attached to the tool. It is commonly used in manufacturing for machining metal and plastic parts. It always used in manufacturing for machining metal and plastic parts. It is decoded by the computer, so that the machine tool can perform the specified action, and the blank is processed into semi-finished parts by cutting tools.

Metal Punching

Stamping is a forming and processing method that applies external forces to plates, strips, pipes and profiles by means of presses and dies to produce plastic deformation or separation, so as to obtain the workpiece (stamping part) with the required shape and size.

Forge

Forging is a processing method that uses forging machinery to exert pressure on the metal blank to produce plastic deformation to obtain forgings with certain mechanical properties, certain shapes and sizes.
